Welcome to The Whaley Center, Fayetteville’s premier destination for an affordable, convenient, and conscientious shopping experience. Whether you’re purchasing clothing (and other effects) or selling from your own closet, we’re in the business of economically and sustainably repurposing clothing to our immediate community. What exactly is the Whaley Center and how does it differ from the traditional retail resale experience? As Fayetteville’s first exclusive retail resale destination, the center conveniently streamlines three shopping experiences into one compact location. That’s right, now you no longer have to traverse around the city to visit all of your favorite retail stores.
The Whaley Center has combined three unique resale experiences and coalesced them into one shopping plaza. At our new, repurposed location, you will have access to all of your thrifting staples, our children’s retail resale store, our young adult retail resale store, and Clothes Mentor. Each of these shops is generally geared towards a specific demographic, meaning the Whaley Center has clothing options for children, teenagers, and well into adulthood. With plenty of potential to find those coveted secret thrift store finds!

The Woman Behind Whaley
&
The Background Of The Business
Karese Whaley first entered the world of retail resale when she opened children’s Retail Resale Store in 2008. Not only did children’s Retail Resale Store serve as a jumping-off point for an extended career in philanthropy it got Whaley interested in other resale ventures. Subsequently, in 2011 and 2013, Whaley opened Young Adult Retail Resale Store and Clothes Mentor, respectively. What drew Whaley to open three different stores, as opposed to one, was the ability to serve multiple age brackets and demographics. Having accessible clothing is pertinent to people of all ages. Up until now, the three stores have operated in three different locations, each garnering a level of success. With the success of each separate business came the idea to consolidate. From that point on, the goal became to find the right place for the center which would offer optimal space and an opportunity for all of the stores to exist in proximity to one another.
The perfect opportunity arose with the recent vacancy of the Dixie Pawn Shop location. A mainstay for over 50 years, the pawnshop location will now be the permanent site of Young Adult Retail Resale Store, children’s Retail Resale Store and Clothes Mentor Fayetteville. Although Dixie Pawn served its purpose well for half a century, we wanted the Whaley Center to feel and look brand-new. Even as purveyors of repurposing and refurbishing, starting from scratch gives us the opportunity to create a sparkling clean space. As a result, when our established clients visit us at The Whaley Center, they’ll find far more than just a convenient plaza for shopping. All three of our stores will be brand-new, impeccably clean, and well organized. We wanted to take the operation to the next level, and that meant cultivating a shopping experience that adequately matches the joy of retail resale shopping.

The Whaley Center consists of three different stores. You might recognize them as national brands, however, they are owned and operated locally here in North Carolina. As such, you will find variances you may not find in corporate locations and a distinctive style in what we do. Each location is geared towards a different age range, although, you are free to transcend as you wish! Here’s a bit of what you can expect at each store.
Community Values
Why We Care
The Whaley Center’s opening represents a greater desire to serve the city of Fayetteville, and the many vibrant communities it encapsulates. When it comes to Fayetteville clothing stores, we believe the city and its enclaves should have access to affordable resale shopping that doesn’t cut the corner on quality. Retail resale shops are important tenants of community outreach and sustainability, as they help keep prices low across the board, giving those who need to purge items a place where they’ll be appreciated. While we recognize that our stores are technically national brands, they operate under our full discretion. For all intents and purposes, we are a group of North Carolinians running a business for other North Carolinians. The art of thrifting plays a significant role in helping our community environmentally, which is why we’ve always been passionate about encouraging people (of all socioeconomic backgrounds) to come shop and donate. Building a space where all three stores exist simultaneously, further allows for individuals and families to shop for all their needs in one collective. The original stores, and now the opening of the Whaley Center is at the epicenter of our work. However, our success has further encouraged us to get involved in our city. Here are the many ways that The Whaley Center practices community outreach and involvement:
We are community sponsors for the following organizations.
Cumberland County Health Department (Maternity Clinic): We strongly believe in the core mission of the maternity clinic, which offers low-risk prenatal care and delivery services to any pregnant Cumberland County resident. These services include (but are not limited to) physical exams, laboratory testing, and prenatal lifestyle education. They also offer smoking cessation and childbirth classes, conduct psychological screenings, and provide referrals to outside agencies. ALL pregnant individuals are eligible for care. All fees are based on income and the number of persons in your household (sliding scale). Our children’s Retail Resale store regularly donates to the cause, as we believe all infants should have access to clean, comfortable clothing.
Cumberland County Foster Family Program: We praise the noble families who take on the important and life-changing role of foster parents. The world is always in need of more competent foster parents. We do what we can to help by offering monthly discount cards at all of The Whaley Center Stores. Our Young Adult Retail Resale Store and Children’s Retail Resale Store Fayetteville NC stores have plenty of options for children, adolescents, and teenagers. We’ve seen time and time again how the right article of clothing can significantly boost confidence, and we strongly believe in helping foster families clothe their children in garments that make them look good, and more importantly, feel good.
Junior League Member. 15 years and counting of providing volunteer work for the community. The Junior League of Fayetteville is an organization of women committed to endorsing and participating in voluntarism. We develop the potential of women, in turn, improving the community through effective action and leadership-trained volunteers.
The Whaley Center is always looking for opportunities to give back to the community by way of clothes gifting (and other forms). Do you run, work for, or know of, an organization that could benefit from our assistance? Community outreach is something we’re continually developing and always looking for input from our fellow Fayetteville residents. If you have an inquiry regarding our community sponsorship and outreach opportunities, let’s chat.

Thrift stores are those stores where all kinds of second-hand items, such as clothes, furniture, and books, are sold at low prices. Thrift stores can be found in almost every city and town across the country. Whether you’re looking for a great bargain on clothing or something unique to decorate your home with, thrift stores offer a wide variety of options that can suit any budget.
When searching for thrift stores near you, it’s important to consider what kind of items you are looking for. Many thrift stores specialize in certain types of merchandise and may not have exactly what you’re looking for. Additionally, many thrift stores are only open during certain days or hours so it is important to call ahead and confirm their operating hours before making a special trip.
When you visit a thrift store, it is also important to inspect items carefully before making a purchase. Many thrift stores do not accept returns so being sure that an item meets your expectations will help prevent any buyer’s remorse. If possible, try to bring a friend along who can offer their opinion and advice on potential purchases.
